Abstract

The crude ketone contg. >=1 light hydrocarbon, water and unconverted alcohol is treated as follows. (1) The crude ketone is distilled to obtain a distillate enriched in ketone contg. water and part of the sec. alcohol and a residue contg. another prt of the alcohol. (2) The distillate is azeotropically distilled with >=1 light hydrocarbon to remove the water. (3) The residue from (2) is distilled to obtain the dehydrated ketone and a residue. The process is pref. applied to catalytic dehydrogenation in the presence of a heavy solvent. It enables easy dehydration to give the ketone contg. 0.2% water.
