Abstract
Methyl mercaptan is obtained by reacting a carbon oxide, hydrogen and hydrogen sulfide (or elemental sulfur) in the vapour phase in the presence of a catalyst which comprises a single- phase solid supported catalyst prepared by mixing an oxide, sulfide, hydroxide or salt of a metal from the group of iron, nickel, chromium, cobalt, molybdenum and zinc with either an organic amine base or an alkali metal inorganic base that is an oxide, hydroxide, sulfide or salt, and then sulfidizing the admixture.
