Abstract

Polysaccharides are produced by inoculating, with a Xanthomonas culture, a fermentation medium comprising a carbohydrate and at least one nitrogen-containing product of organic origin, said product being present in an amount from 0.01 to 0.3 g/liter, expressed in grams of elementary nitrogen per litre of the medium, and fermenting the medium. The resulting polysaccharide provides, on the addition of water, a gel having improved filterability which makes it useful for the assisted recovery of petroleum.
