Abstract
Prepn. of tetraorganotin cpd. (I) is carried out by (a) reacting an organic halide of formula RX (where R is 1-20C alkyl or 2-20C alkenyl X is Cl, Br or I) with a heated suspension of Zn in a molten onium salt (II) (b) adding Sn to the product in an amt. such that the Zn:Sn atomic ratio is >0.5:1 (pref. 1-4:1, esp. 1.5-2.5:1) and (c) heating the mixt. to produce (I). Cpd. (II) is a quat. ammonium or phosphonium salt or a tert. sulphonium salt. Cpds. (I) are useful as intermediates for organotin halides, which can be used as fungicides or intermediates for polymer stabilisers. The process gives high yields (e.g. 55-83% based on onium salt) of products with high purity (e.g. 92-99%). In an example, tetrabutyltin is prepd. using n-butyl chloride and tetra-n-butylammonium iodide.
