Abstract

Accumulator of the lead acid type which can be activated by addition of electrolyte consists of >=1 assembly of shaped positive and negative plates with insulating separators interposed between adjacent plates. Part of the sulphuric acid used for forming the plates is retained in the accumulator and has a specific gravity of 1.25-1.35g/cc., the amount of acid retained is insufficient to connect the plates during storage. The accumulator includes devices for sealing it against air penetration, but permitting gas produced inside the accumulator to escape. Each positive plate contains >=0.1 cc acid per g. of active material. The strength of the acid retained in the accumulator is high enough to maintain a strongly acid soln. for the plates during storage. Since it is the acid used during formation of the plates, rinsing and drying are avoided. Since the formation of acid has a SG of 1.25-1.35, activation of the battery can be effected with the same strength or weaker acid than that normally used for charging dry accumulators, i.e. 1.26g/cc.
