Abstract

Adhesive tapes are made by coating with adhesives, pref. fusible, which are based on copolymerised and/or transversally crosslinked polymers. These are made by heating >=1 polymers to 130-160 degrees C, homogenising pref. by mixing, and then adding the co-reacting or crosslinking material. This effects copolymerisation, or pref. transversal crosslinking, and the reaction prod. is applied to the support. Pref. co-reacting or crosslinking material is added in the molten state or as a soln. or dispersion in an organic solvent, pref. in a mineral oil, during or after the homogenisation stage. Alternatively, it can be applied first of all on the front or back of the support, followed by the polymers copolymerisation and crosslinking taking place directly on the support. The polymer used is pref. butadiene-styrene, isoprene, natural rubber, butylchlorinated rubber, or an ethylene-propylene polymer. The method allows the application of adhesives without requiring a solvent, elevated temps., or large quantities of plasticisers to maintain the viscosity low enough for application. The present invention allows fusible adhesive to be used on industrial or packaging tapes, by increasing the rupture resistance under load through the change from thermoplastic to thermosetting properties.
