Abstract
New 3-furyl-2-phenyl-2- propenoic acid derivs. have formula (I) in which M is a lower mono-, di- or trialkanolammonium ion, the cation of a 2-5C alpha-amino acid, an ammonium cation, the cation of an alkali metal, lower alkyl or H. (I) have high absorption in the range 290-320 nm and are useful as sunscreening agents. They are soluble in water and water-alcohol mixts, and they are stable towards atmospheric oxygen. (I) have no irritant effect on the skin. In an example 3-furyl-2-phenyl-2-propenoic acid (i.e. (I M=H)) is prepd. in 85% yield by reacting 136g phenylacetic acid with 128 g furfural in 200ml acetic anhydride in the presence of 280 ml triethylamine for 6 hrs. at room temp.
