Abstract

Each panel module has a transparent solar input layer fixed in a heat-insulating housing and enclosing a chamber in which the energy-absorbing fluid is contained. This may be e.g. demineralised and de-gassed water, or freon. The panel is mounted vertically and at top and bottom ends the fluid chambers are linked to U-shaped hollow troughs, with flexible bellows connection. These troughs are in contact with transverse pipes in which the main heat transfer fluid flows, and are clamped tightly to the latter by clamps which are spring-loaded to the module housing. Heat input to the individual panel results in part-vapourisation of the contained primary fluid which in turn gives up its heat by conduction through the upper and lower U-trough connections to the main secondary fluid stream. Individual modules may be removed and replaced at will without interruption of the main fluid flow.
