Abstract

Prepn. of aluminium sulphate solns., free of iron and other heavy metals, by lixiviation, with water or a weakly acid soln., of thermally sulphated clays (I) mixed with activated clays and/or other bases (II) as additives to give a lye from which any iron or other heavy metal is subsequently removed by treatment on a liquid/solid or liquid/liquid ion exchanger (III). (III) is regenerated with HCl or a mixt. of HCl and NaCl and these reagents are themselves recovered on another ion exchanger which is in turn regenerated by washing with water. (II) are pref. activated clay, aluminium hydroxide and calcium oxide or carbonate and are incorporated with (I) at around 5-10 wt.%. The removal is simple and gives highly pure alumina suitable for electrometallurgy to Al.
