Abstract
A method of preparing a dense and strong polycrystalline ceramic body, containing alumina/3 "and having (i) an electrical resistivity for conduction of sodium ion at 300ºC of less than about 9 ohm-cm, or equal to this value, and (ii) a fine and uniform microstructure, and a resulting fracture resistance comparable to that achieved by means of hot stamping techniques, comprising: (a) preparing a powder mixture comprising aluminum oxide, oxide sodium and lithium oxide in stoichiometric proportions required to produce alumina/3 "when heated to crystal formation temperatures, said lithium oxide being present in an amount that fluctuates between approximately 0.1 and approximately 5% by weight of the total of said mixture and being provided by a lithium aluminum compound having the formula Li20: nAl2o3'' where n is equal to at least 5; (B) crudely form said prepared mixture into the desired shape; and (C) synthesize the crude shaped body at a temperature above about 1500ºC until a desirable conversion to alumina/3 "and almost the theoretical density thereof is achieved.
