Abstract

A process for the preparation of a coated metal substrate for use in the food industry, employing a high solids content coating composition, comprising the following steps: (a) form a coating composition consisting of the following components: (i) 20-70% of an alkyldimethylolfenol of structure **(See formula)** where R is lower alkyl; (ii) 5-60% of an alkylene diphenol of structure where R1 and R2 are methyl or hydrogen, x is 0, 1 or 2 and R3 is alkyl; (iii) 50-60% of a normally liquid 1,2-epoxy compound, with an epoxide equivalent of between 130 and 200; (iv) 5-25% of a non-volatile polyol; (v) a catalytic amount of an amine; dispersing all the mentioned components in a non-reactive organic solvent in sufficient quantity to give a viscosity between 100 and 1000 cps with not less than 75% solids; (b) treating the metal substrate by applying the coating composition thereto and (c) subjecting the treated metal substrate to a temperature of between about 177 and 232ºC until the coating composition has cured.
