A procedure for the preparation of new pyrimidine derivatives of the formula: **(See formula)** where R1 and R3 represent hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R2 and R4 represent hydrogen atoms, alkyl groups of 1 to 8 carbon atoms, dialkyl aminoalkyl or aryl, the groups (see formula) can also represent piperazinyl groups optionally substituted in the nitrogen at position 4 with a methyl, phenyl or benzyl group; whose procedure consists of: a) reacting the compounds of formula: **(See formula)** where R1, R2, R3 and R4 have the meaning given in formula (I), in a mixture of water and a water-miscible solvent, in a homogeneous phase, in a neutral or acidic medium and at a temperature between 0ºC and 50ºC, with a solution of bromine in water or in a solvent miscible with water or with a solution of an oxygenated derivative of bromine, b) neutralize the medium after the reaction, adding a solution of an alkaline hydroxide; c) extracting the obtained product, using a solvent insoluble in water; and d) evaporating said solvent.
