Abstract

A procedure for obtaining ethylene oxide, reacting ethylene in the vapor phase with molecular oxygen under conditions of ethylene oxide formation, characterized in that the reaction is carried out in the presence of a silver catalyst, which has been prepared by a process comprising the following steps: (a) impregnating a porous refractory support, having a surface area of from 0.03 m2/g to 10 m2/g, with a solution of an alkali metal compound having an atomic number of 19 at 55, in such a concentration as is obtained in the final catalyst, optionally after extraction with a solvent after step (b) or (c) below, a content of from 0.25 to 16 milliequivalents -gram of the alkali metal per kilogram of total catalyst for each square meter of surface area of the support per gram of support of the catalyst ((meq-g/kg)/(m2/g)); (b) at least partially drying the impregnated support of step (a); (c) contacting the product of step (b) with a liquid phase containing a dissolved silver compound or a suspension of silver particles or a silver compound, in an amount sufficient to deposit from 1 to 25 per weight percent silver, based on the total catalyst, on the surface of the support, and (d) heat treating the product from step (c) to convert the silver compound to metallic silver.
