Abstract

Procedure to prepare benzodiazepines, of general formula: **(See formula)** wherein R1 and R2 are hydrogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, halogen, nitro, trifluoromethyl, methylthio, methylsulfonyl or hydroxy; R3 is hydrogen or lower alkyl; **(See formula)** wherein R4 is hydrogen, lower alkyl, 2-hydroxyethyl, phenyl, or phenylalkyl; n is 2 or 3; and R5 is lower alkyl; characterized in that a compound of the formula is reacted: **(See formula)** wherein E is hydrogen and R1, R2 and R3 define as above, with a metal-amine complex of a group IVb metal of the Periodic Lip and of an amine of formula: **(See formula)** wherein R4, R5 and n are defined as above, at an elevated temperature, in the presence of a solvent; and then the product is recovered from the reaction mixture.
