Abstract
A procedure for preparing a solid paint that has dimensional stability, based on ion bonding, and a gel resistance of 100 to 200 millimeters of penetration, characterized by: a) dissolving or suspending a curable polymeric resin to form a composition polymer selected from: 1) a solution of a curable polymeric resin having a molecular weight ranging from 1,000 to 7,000, and enough reactive acid functional groups selected from the carboxylic, sulfonic and phosphonic groups to yield an acid number of 20 to 80, the resin is dissolved in a non-polar solvent, to provide a 25 to 90 percent by weight solution; 2) a stabilized non-aqueous dispersion of a polymer having a molecular weight of between 25,000 and 1,000,000, and sufficient reactive acidic functional groups, selected from the group consisting of the carboxylic, sulfonic and phosphonic groups, to supply an acid number of 25 to 60, the polymer is dispersed as a 25 to 90 percent by weight suspension in a nonpolar non-solvent; 3) a mixture of a non-binding NAD resin, comprising a stabilized dispersion of a polymer having a molecular weight ranging from 25,000 to 1,000,000, dispersed as a suspension of 25 to 90 percent by weight in a non-solvent non-solvent polar, the resin has no reactive functional group sites, with a solution of a binder ion resin as described in paragraph (1), the ratio of the non-binder NAD resin to the ion agglutination is 2: 1 to 8: 1, or mixtures thereof, in a ratio that provides sufficient reactive acidic functional groups, necessary for the indicated dimensional stability, when cross-linked by ionic cross-linking agents; b) mixing pigments, fillers, colorants and 0.5 to 5 percent by weight of a dryer consisting of an organic acidic metal salt in the resin solution; c) incorporate, with vigorous stirring, a 20 to 30 percent by weight solution, or a suspension, of a metal hydroxide in a C1-8 aliphatic alcohol containing 100 to 600 mole percent of the amount of metal hydroxide which is required to neutralize the reactive acid group of the resin.
