Abstract
An improved isomerization process comprising arranging three fixed adsorbent beds, all of which have essentially the same adsorption capacity and the same void space and contain particles comprising a crystalline zeolitic molecular sieve adsorbent having an effective pore diameter of from more 4 to less than 6 angstroms, and which further provides as adsorption feedstock a mixture of normal and non-normal hydrocarbon compounds, the component of normal paraffins comprising n-pentane and n-hexane, adsorbing n-pentane and n-hexane of said feedstock in said adsorbent fixed beds by passing the feedstock to one end of each of said beds, and recovering the non-normal and non-adsorbed hydrocarbon compounds at the other end of each bed, desorbing the n-pentane and n-hexane from each of these beds by purging with hydrogen in a counter-flow direction Enter the inlet direction of said feedstock, and pass the mixed effluent hydrogen, n-pentane and n-hexane through a reactor, containing a zeolitic molecular sieve isomerization catalyst, under isomerization conditions in which the improvement includes desorbing the three beds mentioned in such a way that at any given time more than two beds are being desorbed, and the final stage of desorption in one of the three beds is simultaneous to the initial stage of desorption in another of the three beds.
