Abstract

A method for preparing solid calcium hypochlorite, in particles, having a smooth, rounded surface, from an aqueous, pumpable, sprayable slurry or slurry of calcium hypochlorite, comprising: (a) maintaining a mobile bed of hypochlorite of solid calcium in particles, containing about 5 to 30 weight percent of water in the lower part of a distribution zone having an upper part and a lower part; (b) maintaining a temperature in said distribution zone within the range of about 40 to 70º c; (c) raising a part of said moving bed to said upper part and releasing said particles to fall separately in said bed through said distribution zone; (d) spraying or spraying on said dropping particles a pumpable and sprayable aqueous suspension of calcium hypochlorite containing about 45 to 90 weight percent water; (e) simultaneously evaporating and removing water from said suspension in said falling particles, whereby said particles are coated with a layer of solid calcium hypochlorite and the water content is between about 5 and 30 weight percent, and (f) removing at least a portion of the rounded and coated solid calcium hypochlorite particles from said distribution zone.
