Abstract
Procedure for obtaining chlorine and caustic alkali, characterized in that it comprises electrolyzing an aqueous solution of an alkali metal chloride in an electrolytic cell comprising: (a) a terminal anode of a film-forming metal that has, on one of the surfaces, an electrocatalytically active coating; (b) a terminal cathode consisting of a foraminous sheet of iron or steel parallel to said anode; and (c) interposed between said cathode and anode, at least one bipolar unit comprising (A) a laminate of: (i) a sheet of a film-forming metal having on one of the surfaces an electrocatalytically active coating, said acting foil as anode; (II) a first sheet of iron or steel, and (III) a continuous metallic interlayer interposed between said sheets; said metal interlayer being electrically and mechanically bonded to at least one of said sheets by means of an electrically conductive cement, said metal interlayer acting in such a way that it substantially reduces the diffusion of hydrogen atoms from the first sheet of iron or steel to the said film-forming metal sheet when the bipolar unit is used in a cell, and (B) a cathode consisting of a foraminous sheet of iron or steel parallel to and separated from the first sheet of iron or steel but in electrical contact with her; the cathode, the bipolar unit or units and the anode in series being arranged such that an active cathodic surface is parallel and faces an anode compartment, but isolated and separated from it; said anode compartment being provided with an inlet for electrolyte and with an outlet for liquids and gases.
