Abstract

The magnetic tape (8) is fed from a supply reel past a transducer head (20) and a conductive trace (8') is provided on the magnetic tape (8) at the position of the start of each recording on the tape (8). The position of each conductive trace (8') is determined as a function of the diameter of each of the tape reels. The tape (8) is fed past the head (20) and each of the conductive traces (8') detected, while the instantaneous diameter of one of the tape reels is monitored, with a control signal provided when a detected trace (8') is coincident with a predetermined tape diameter, the control signal being used to halt the tape.
