Abstract

A method for forming casting cores and molds, characterized by the operations of: 1) contacting a hot pattern with an easily flowable resin coated sand, consisting essentially of a) sand particles coated with from about 1% to 8%, relative to the weight of the sand, of phenol-formaldehyde novolac resin; b) a curing agent, and c) from about 1% to about the weight of the phenol-formaldehyde novolak resin, of a urea compound selected from the group consisting of urea, ethylene-urea, propylene-urea and its mixtures; 2) keeping the resin-coated sand against the hot pattern to bind together a part of the resin-coated sand particles to form a casting mold or core of suitable thickness; 3) separating the non-agglutinated particles of resin-coated sand from the bonded sand particles forming the casting mold or core; 4) curing the mold or casting male, the hot pattern having a temperature of from about 177ºC to 317º c; and 5) removing the mold or casting male from the pattern.
