A process for the production of food granules for animals of improved structural integrity, comprising: a) conditioning a ground food product for animals by exposure to high temperature and humidity conditions; b) adding an aqueous binder solution to said conditioned product while the moisture content of said product is maintained at a level of less than about 25% by weight, said solution containing, binder, at least about 0.1% by weight of the agent sequestrant and an alginate salt in an amount sufficient to provide in the granulated product between about 0.1 and 0.3% by weight of the alganate salt, said alginate molecules being slowly crosslinked by the free calcium in said product for improve the structural integrity of the same when granulated; c) granulating said product under conditions of high temperature and pressure with which a granulated food product is formed.
