Abstract

A method of producing a calcium carbonate-based filler, protected against acid attack, intended for use in papermaking, comprising the steps of (A) forming a protective agent for calcium carbonate by (a) mixing that of an anionic starch with a water soluble alginate in an amount such that it provides in the resulting mixture 10.5 to 15.5 weight percent of the alginate radical, based on the mixture; (b) mixing a cationic starch with a water soluble alginate in an amount such that it provides in the resulting mixture 22 to 35 weight percent of the alginate radical, based on the mixture; (c) mixing an anionic starch with a water soluble polyacrylate in an amount such that it provides in the resulting mixture 10 to 15 percent by weight, based on the mixture, and (d) intimately mixing calcium carbonate with 5 to 10 weight percent based on calcium carbonate, of at least one of the protective agents formed in step (A).
