Abstract

Method for preparing an aqueous drilling fluid that includes an aqueous phase and a dispersed solids phase, characterized in that a mixture of: (1) an aqueous phase including a saturated calcium hydroxide solution and a calcium salt having a solubility in water greater than that of the calcium hydroxide dissolved therein, said aqueous phase having an alkalinity equal to at least 0, 2 milliliters of 0.02% normal sulfuric acid for each millimeter of aqueous phase dosed at the end point of phenolphthalein, and a concentration of calcium ions equal to at least 200 parts per million, by weight; and (2) a dispersed solid phase that includes a quantity of attapulgite and/or asbestos sufficient for the drilling fluid to have a plastic viscosity of between approximately 5 and 20 centipoises and a relaxation point of between approximately 5 and 40, and a ratio between the relaxation point and the plastic viscosity included between approximately 0.25 and 1.0.
