Process for the sulfonation of aromatic substances, characterized in that said substances having a boiling point not higher than 100ºC at a pressure of 0.1 mm hg, said aromatic compounds being capable of undergoing the direct action of sulfur trioxide to yield a product having a sulfonated aromatic nucleus but otherwise substantially inert under the reaction conditions with respect to sulfur trioxide and mixtures thereof, it is stated that: said aromatic substance, at a temperature above its melting point, and thus in liquid form, it is boiled in a reaction chamber at a temperature not higher than 100º c, under a pressure of from 0.1 mm hg to atmospheric pressure; gaseous sulfur trioxide is introduced into the boiling liquid aromatic substance to react exothermically therewith, making the heat released in the exothermic sulfonation reaction such that the liquid aromatic substance continues to boil, and providing the latent heat of volatilization of said liquid aromatic substance; the aromatic substance volatilized in this way is converted back into liquid in a heat exchanger, so that the latent heat of volatilization is released into the heat exchanger and the heat released in the sulfonation reaction is thus removed from the chamber of reaction; the aromatic substance converted back into liquid in the heat exchanger is recirculated to the reaction chamber, and the pressure in the reaction chamber and the speed with which the gaseous sulfur trioxide is introduced into the liquid aromatic substance are controlled in a controlled manner.
