Abstract
Procedure for the production of aromatic compounds, stabilizers of organic materials against degradation by ultraviolet irradiation, of formula I **(See formula)** wherein Z1 and Z2 each independently represent hydrogen, halogen, hydroxyl, -CN, -COOH, alkyl or (C1-C12) phenyl, phenyl mono- or di-substituted by (C1-C8) alkyl, a -XR group or -COOR group, where X means oxygen, sulfur, -SO2 -NH, -N-C1-C4-alkyl or (see formula) and R means (C1-C12) alkyl, (C5-C12) cycloalkyl, (C5-C11) alkyl (C1-C7) alkyl, (C5-C12) cycloalkyl or (C5-C11) cycloalkyl (C1-C7) mono-, di- or tri-substituted in the cycle by an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms; (C7-C12) aralkyl, phenyl, or (C7-C12) aralkyl or phenyl substituted on the aryl nucleus by one or two (C1-C6) alkyl groups, Y1 and Y2 each have the meanings of Z1 and of Z2, where at least one of Y1 and Y2 means a group **(See formula)** wherein R1 signifies tertiary (C4-C9) alkyl, R2 signifies hydrogen, (C1-C18) alkyl; cyloalkyl (C5-C12); cycloalkyl (C5-C11) -alkyl (C1-C7); (C5-C12) cycloalkyl or (C5-C11) cycloalkyl-(C1-C7) alkyl mono-, di- or tri-substituted in the cycle by a (C1-C4) alkyl group; (C7-C12) aralkyl or (C7-C12) aralkyl mono- or di-substituted in the aryl nucleus by a (C1-C6) alkyl group, and A represents oxygen, sulfur or -NH, and M represents hydrogen or an equivalent of a bivalent metal cation, a process characterized in that a) a compound of formula III is condensed **(See formula)** wherein Z1 and Z2 are as defined above, and Y3 and Y4 each have the meanings of Z1 and Z2 each, and in addition Y3 and Y4 mean, independently of each other, a group -AH, where at least one of Y3 and Y4 signifies a group -AH, in which A is as defined above, with a compound of formula IV, **(See formula)** wherein R1 and R2 y are as defined above, and W stands for chlorine, bromine or hydroxyl, with the proviso that W stands for hydroxyl only when A in the group -AH stands for oxygen or sulfur, and, in cases where if required, the resulting compound is converted to the complex of a bivalent metal.
