Abstract

A method of producing dense powder particles of a composite ceramic product having an intimate interdispersion of the initial constituent particles, a large internal interfacial surface within the individual particles of the powder produced, the individual constituent particles being distributed in a substantially uniform manner with narrow gaps between particles within the particles of the powder produced and a smaller surface area than that of the initial individual particles, a procedure that comprises forming a composite charge of the medium that produces shocks during grinding and the ceramic powder particles to be ground, being the weight ratio of shock producing medium to dust greater than 1: 1, subjecting the charge under dry conditions to a high transmissive energy grinding so that the individual constituent dust particles are continuously in contact with the compressive energies the medium that produces the shocks, and continue such grinding for a period of time that exceeds the threshold point of the constituents of the powder, the grinding period being correlated with the weight ratio of the means of producing shocks to powder of such so that it represents a point above the line ABC of Figure 2 of the attached drawings, whereby dense, composite, and mechanically cold-bonded ceramic dust particles are produced.
