A method of treating cereals and other seeds by means of infrared radiation in order to increase the utilization capacity of starch, in which the seeds are passed under a source of infrared radiation with a wavelength in a range between 2 and 6 microns while supported on an endless metallic conveyor belt that has a mesh structure, the translation speed being such that it causes swelling and breakage of the seeds but not their carbonization.
