A method of recovering one or more metal ores from a metal ore or metals containing iron and sulfide, comprising forming an aqueous acid leaching solution of the mineral and at least a stoichiometric amount of nitric acid at a concentration of about 30 to 50% by volume, heat the solution to a temperature equal to or higher than the melting point of the sulfur while the solution is contained under a relatively inert atmosphere, control the temperature of the solution to precipitate the sulfur from the solution, control the ph of the solution to precipitate the iron ores from the acid-soluble phase of the solution, relatively separate the precipitates from the acid-soluble phase of the solution, and the acid-soluble phase of the solution from the acid-insoluble phase of it, and recover the ore or metal ores from the acid-soluble phase.
