A method of manufacturing weldable armor plates for armored vehicles, which comprises forming plates at least 25mm thick from an alloy having the following composition: Zn 5.0-6.0%; Mg 1.7-2.1%; Zr 0.05-0.2%; Mn 0-0.4%; Cu up to 0.15%; the Ti, Fe and Si respectively being kept below the following maximum impurity levels of 0.1%, 0.5% and 0.3% respectively, the other impurities each being kept below 0.05% and below a total of 0.15%, the rest being Al, and subjecting the alloy plates to a heat treatment in solution, sharply cooling the heated sheets and aging the sharply cooled sheets by reheating to a temperature of " aging".
