A process for preparing 2- (aryl) -as-triazine-3,5 (2H, 4H) -diones, characterized by contacting, at a temperature of about 130 to 170ºC, the acid 2- (aryl) -2, 3,4,5-tetrahydro-3,5-dioxo-as-triazine-6-carboxylic with at least about 0.1 molar ratio of a mercapto-substituted hydrocarbon carboxylic acid, or a lower alkyl ester thereof, until the reaction is materially complete, the ratio of said mercaptocarboxylic acid to said triazine-carboxylic acid being maintained between about 0.1: 1.0 and 10: 1.
