Abstract

Procedure for making barium ferrite particles, in which large surface area acicular Fe2O3 alpha particles and BaCO3 react with each other forming a ferrite of the generalized formula BaFe12O19, followed by treatment of the ferrite with an acidic aqueous solution to remove undesirable reaction products and any unreacted materials, which procedure is characterized in that the reaction takes place at a temperature of 850º-1100ºC in the presence of 3/4 to 1-3/4 weight percent of a lead compound, more than 1 to 6 weight percent flux, to provide barium ferrite particles that are specially prepared for machining orientation in admixture with a workable, non-magnetic matrix material.
