Abstract

A method of stabilizing an arc in an arc device having an axially spaced pair of electrodes, at least one of which is a liquid-cooled hollow cathode, located in a chamber of greater diameter than the space between the electrodes and surrounding thereto, said method comprising passing coolant along the outer surface of said hollow cathode and varying the speed of said coolant as it passes along the outer wall of said hollow cathode, to create a zone on the interior surface of said hollow cathode, which is at a temperature substantially higher than any other zone of said interior surface, thereby creating an arc termination zone from which the arc will not move.
