Abstract
Procedure for the preparation of cationic dyes of formula I, **(See formula)** in which R1 means hydrogen or the methyl group, R2 and R3 stand for, independently of one another, hydrogen, a phenyl, benzyl, lower alkyl or betahydroxy-alkyl group or R2 and R3 signify together with the nitrogen atom, a morpholinic ring and X means a charge equivalent of an anion and the benzene ring A may still be further substituted by chlorine, a lower alkyl group or a lower alkoxy group, characterized in that an azo dye of formula XI is rented and quaternized, **(See formula)** in which A and R1 to R3 have the significance indicated under formula I, in the presence of magnesium oxide in an aliphatic ketone with a boiling point of 60-130ºC as a reaction medium at temperatures of 60-130ºC, with di-methyl sulfate, and the organic solvent is removed at a pH value below 5 by steam distillation.
