Abstract
Aminomethane diphosphonic acid and its salts are prepared by reacting a phosphorus trihalide with formamide and hydrolysing the product, and optionally forming a salt. The phosphorus trihalide is preferably phosphorus trichloride, and the molar ratio of phosphorus trihalide to formamide is preferably from 1 : 4 to 4 : 1. The reaction mixture may also contain phosphorous acid or water. The reaction is preferably carried out at 0-75 C.
