A process for preparing sterile ampicillin trihydrate having a particle size in the range of from about 5 microns to about 100 microns, with most of the compound having a particle size greater than about 20 microns, characterized by substantially dissolving trihydrate of ampicillin in water by adding an acid, sterilizing said solution, raising the pH of said sterile solution to approximately 4.0-5.0, and separating sterile, crystallized ampicillin trihydrate having said particle size range therefrom. .
