Abstract
A power supply system for continuously operating a gas discharge lamp from an alternating current line source, comprising voltage multiplying means having input and output terminals for connecting respectively to the alternating current line source and to the gas discharge lamp and including means for providing a dc voltage at said output terminals, said system being characterized in that said voltage multiplying means is of a non-inductive type and including means for producing such dc voltage in said output terminals, which is sufficiently high to produce a current discharge through the lamp subsequent to an initial ionization of said lamp, but not so high as to cause said absence of discharge in said initial ionization, prime means including a primer electrode arranged in proximity of said lamp to apply a train of priming pulses to the lamp to produce said initial ionization, and said multiplying means including means for supplying to the lamp, after said initial discharge of current, rectified current from said source of alternating current line of sufficient magnitude to sustain the discharge at reduced voltage as well as to provide continuous light emission from the lamp.
