Abstract

Method for manufacturing a sintered composite cutting tool consisting of intimately mixing at least one metal carbide chosen from the group consisting of vanadium carbide, tungsten carbide, niobium carbide, hafnium carbide, zirconium carbide, titanium carbide and tantalum carbide with a metal binder consisting of at least one metal chosen from the group consisting of platinum, palladium, rhodium and ruthenium, said metal carbide representing 70% to 96% by weight of the total mixture and said metal representing or said metals chosen from 4% to 30% by weight of the total mixture, and said metal binder including at least ruthenium in an amount greater than 50% by weight of the total metal binder; in compacting said intimate mixture to substantially define the shape of the cutting tool and in sintering said intimate mixture during or after said compaction to obtain a composite cutting tool having a degree of hardness greater than 1,200 V.P.N.
