Abstract

Articles are centrifugally cast from liquid which, during the-rotation, contacts only fluid phases, one of which is a liquid of greater density than the casting liquid, any other fluid having a lower density. In the first embodiment (Fig. 1, not shown), the denser liquid (l 1 ) forms a bearing on shaping surface against which liquid (l 2 ) is cast the upper surface of (l 2 ) contacting a gas (g). In another embodiment (Figs. 4-7, 9, not shown), the liquid (l 2 ) is cast between a denser liquid (l 1 ) and a less dense liquid (l 3 ) and there may be an interface between (l 2 ) and (g). Casting of lenses and moulds therefor are exemplified. Casting liquids exemplified include monomers of styrene, methyl methacrylate, glycol and glycidyl methacrylate, diglycol diallyl dicarbonate, epoxy, &c. polymerizing during the casting, or plaster of Paris. The bottom bearing liquid may be concentrated solutions of salts e.g. sodium chloride, mercury, gallium, low-melting alloys &c. The upper bearing liquid may be paraffin oil, silicone oil, &c.
