Abstract
A liquid composition for loosening and removing deposits from combustion chambers of internal combustion engines, comprises a mixture of at least one monoterpene selected from benchone, thujone, carone, pinocamphone, verbenone and umbellulone and at least one solvent which is capable of dissolving such engine deposits in the presence of the monoterpene(s). The solvent may be an essential oil e.g. oil of turpentine, oil of thusa and thyme, amyl acetate, tetralin, acetone, propyl acetate, ethyl acetate, decalin, toluene, benzene, xylene and others. A lubricating oil which is castor oil, colza oil, olein, coconut oil or palm oil may be present. A preferred composition comprises 5 to 45% by volume of penchone, castor oil, toluene, oil of turpentine tetralin and amyl acetate. An internal combustion engine is cleaned by introducing into a combustion chamber of said engine while it is at rest and the cooling fluid thereof is at a temperature of at least 75 C. in the case of a water cooled engine or the temperature of the engine oil is at least 80 C. in the case of an air cooled engine, to fill said combustion chamber, a liquid composition as above, allowing the composition to remain in the engine for at least 20 minutes while ingress of air is prevented and then starting up the engine and ejecting said composition and any material removed from the surfaces of the engine thereby through the exhaust duct(s) thereof.
