Abstract
A furnace for the heat treatment of materials comprises a preheater P, a rotary hearth H disposed in a chamber 12 and in the form of a pan 11 having side walls 14 in which the preheated material is retained before release on to an inclined lower wall 15, and a cooler C. The preheated material falls directly on to the rotating hearth H where it is fired by means of a burner 16 extending through the stationary wall of the chamber 12. The retention time of the material on the hearth can be controlled by reducing or increasing the angle of inclination of the hearth about a horizontal fulcrum 18, adjusting the speed of rotation of the hearth or by adjusting the burner 16. In another embodiment of the hearth (Fig. 3, not shown), adjustment of the inclination of the pan is effected through a lever (24) and a quadrant (25).
