Abstract

Glass vacuum vessels, particularly colour television tubes, are vacuum-tight sealed by a non-crystallizing sealing glass with sealing temperature below the deformation temperature of the glass parts, the sealing glass being an intimate mixture of a comminuted basic glass with not more than 20% by weight of a comminuted addition of which more than 50% by weight consists of a glass with a coefficient of thermal expansion of less than 40 x 10-7, and wherein the coefficient of thermal expansion of the basic glass is higher than that of the glass parts and the coefficient of thermal expansion of the sealing glass is less than that of the basic sealing glass. The addition, preferably 4-16% of the basic glass, may be entirely or substantially of quartz glass, borosilicate glass having a coefficient of thermal expansion of 38 x 10-7 or an aluminosilicate glass having a coefficient of thermal expansion of 8 x 10-7. Small amounts of alumina or zirconium silicate or similar metal compounds may be added to strengthen the seal. Basic sealing glasses suggested lie within the ranges in percentages by weight: PbO 70-85 B 2 O 3 10-21 ZnO 0-4À5 Al 2 O 3 0-10 SiO 2 0-4À5 CoO 0-0À6.
