Abstract

In a method of making expanded nodules from a paste formed of water and carbonaceous materials, e.g. shale coals, part of the shale coal is crushed and roasted before being mixed with the remainder of the crushed coal to adjust the carbon content of the mixture, which is then made into a paste and formed into nodules which are roasted, expanded and cooled. The preliminary roasting step is preferably in a fluidized bed. In an illustrated embodiment, shales containing 10% b.w. carbon are treated, 60% being completely decarbonized before being mixed with the remainder. This mixture containing 4% b.w. carbon is suitable for subsequent treatment in a revolving furnace.
