Abstract

A component, e.g. p-xylene, of a mixture, e.g. of o-, m- and p-xylenes, is separated by directly contacting the mixture in countercurrent flow with a substantially immiscible liquid refrigerant whereby crystals of the component form, the refrigerant being one in which the crystals become preferentially dispersed relative to the mother liquor, and the dispersion being removed and the crystals recovered. The interfacial tension of the refrigerant relative to the mother liquor preferably does not exceed 5 dynes/cm., and the crystals may be entrained with the aid of a stirrer. The refrigerant, e.g. at -45 to -80 C, may be water containing a freezing- point depressant, e.g. methanol, a densityincreasing substance, e.g. CaCl 2 or glycol monomethyl ether, and a surfactant, e.g. Na dodecyl benzene sulphonate. The mother liquor may be recycled and the crystals washed twice, preferably with a liquid having the same composition as the refrigerant, at temperatures below their m.p., e.g. -40 C and 0 C for respective washes of p-xylene crystals.
