Abstract
A battery for supplying the driving circuit of an electric timepiece comprises a disc or layer of a radio-active, #-ray emitting source 1 of Ni 63 or Sr 40 between plates 2, 21 of magnesium oxide. Secondary electrons released from these plates charge collector electrodes 3, 31 spaced from the plates. The battery is accommodated in a sealed, evacuated casing and aligned windows 6, 7 in the plate 2 and the electrode 3 enable #-rays to be received by a semi-conductor device 8 to provide a time base for the timepiece. In a modification the source 1 may be rod shaped and surrounded by cylindrical plates and electrodes. Alternatively the battery may comprise a source of Sr 90 located between two doped crystals of PN-type or NP-type in which electron-hole pairs are produced by the #-particles. A battery is also described in which the collector electrode is directly charged to a voltage of about 300 V. by a source of #-radiation such as tritium.
