Abstract

An underwater subway includes longitudinally-reinforced-concrete units 10 and piers 11, each unit comprising passages, or cavities, 18, 19, 25 for traffic and ventilation, and each pier comprising hollow columns 11a, 11b, 11c and a beam 17. Flanges 22 for connecting mutually-abutting units are sealed by rubber packing. Tie rods 14 anchor the units and the piers. Each column is plugged with concrete 16. Movable bulkheads 23 are located adjacent the flanges.
