Abstract

In a Van de Graaff type electrostatic generator, the moving charge carrier comprises an endless insulating filament 13, Fig. 2, wound round spaced, grooved, guide rollers 14, 15 with the joined ends passing over guide wheels 16, 17 adjacent the roller 15. As shown in Fig. 1, the charge carrier and a particle accelerator 7 which it supplies are located respectively in passages 4, 5 in a stack of potential distribution rings 2, roller 15 being located inside a high voltage electrode 3 and roller 14 coupled to a driving motor 19. Grooved charging rollers 21, 211 contact the filament where it leaves the rollers 14, 15. If the latter are metal, the charging rollers are provided with insulating covers. The rings 2 consist of foam plastic covered with aluminium foil and they are surrounded by a foil casing 31 which forms an enclosure through which filtered air may be pumped. A gas of high dielectric strength may be added to the air. The generator may also incorporate more than one charge carrier.
