Abstract

A tape is pressed against one or other of two drive capstans, which rotate continuously in opposite directions, by one or other of two retractable pinch-rollers, each of which is provided with a brake which is effective only in the retracted position of the pinch-roller. The brake may comprise a pair of brake shoes (9, 10, Fig. 1), having braking surfaces substantially at right angles to each other, or a friction lining 14, Fig. 2, on a resilient plate 13 which is clamped at one end and adjustable at the other end by means of a screw 15.
