Abstract

A flame detector includes means movable from a non-operative position to block the path of radiation to the flame sensing element, the means returning to its non-operative position by the effect of gravity. The flame is detected by a discharge-tube type of detector receiving ultraviolet radiation through a quartz window 100. Flame failure is simulated periodically or randomly by a timer circuit which opens a valve to supply high-pressure to a port 54 whereby a hollow stainless steel ball 102 is moved to position 104 where it shields the detector tube. The ball 102 falls back when the high-pressure supply is cut off. An AND gate is provided to receive the sensing element signal and a "high-pressure-on" signal and actuate an audible or visible alarm if both signals are positive simultaneously. The mounting of the detector assembly in a burner is substantially as described in Specification 1,037,235.
