Abstract

The invention comprises novel thiobenzamides III of the formula wherein R is an alkyl group and R1 is methyl or ethyl and their oxidation with hydrogen peroxide in an alkaline medium at a pH of not more than 11 to give the corresponding N,N- dialkyl - 3 - methoxy (or ethoxy) - 4 - hydroxybenzamides. The thiobenzamides III are obtained by treating with glacial acetic acid their dialkylamine salts, which are made by reacting 3-methoxy (or ethoxy)-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde in an anhydrous C 1-3 alkanol as solvent with more than 1 g. atom of sulphur and at least 4 moles of a dialkylamine of the formula at a temperature of 65 to 80 C.
