Abstract

In apparatus for "creeling" filamentary low or "sliver yarn" which is readily threaded therethrough and maintained free from twisting, tow T supplied from containers or cans 14 passes through guides 34 into the creel, is flattened into strand at 16 and then either spread or condensed to a predetermined width at 18, turned to a path parallel to the axis of the apparatus frame at a turning station 20 and fed from a discharge station D to a processing apparatus such as a Pacific Converter whereby the filaments of the strand are cut or broken into fibres of uniform staple length which are drafted into slivers and coiled in cans in readiness for further processing. At 18 a spreader-condenser bar 36 is rotatable about its longitudinal axis so that tow engaged by an arcuate or curved portion 44 is spread or condensed according to whether it passes over the convex or concave portion. At 16, Figs. 8 and 9, guide bars 56 and 58 straighten and flatten each tow into a generally flat strand and brake it sufficiently to pull out crimps or like deformations. If the tow supply fails or the sliver breaks, the bar 58, pivoted to an electrically insulated bar 60, drops against earthed bar 56 whereby a relay is energised to interrupt the circuit to the driving motor of the converter, which is thus stopped, and when the supply is renewed the motor circuit is restored. If the converter stops, operating lever 84 is automatically and pneumatically moved upwardly thereby rotating bar 60 carrying with it the lever arm 90 which in turn bears down on bar 58 which thus clamps the tow tightly to the bar 56. Air pressure is maintained on pneumatic drag brake assembly 142 so that the rolls thereof will not turn and thus the tow between these rolls and station 16 is maintained taut in readiness for restarting the apparatus.
